چکیده

A packet-based least cushion first/most urgent first (PB-LCF/MUF) maximal matching algorithm is presented in this paper for combined input and output queued (CIOQ) switches with multiple traffic classes. The main benefit of using a CIOQ switch is to alleviate memory bandwidth requirement while providing quality of service (QoS) guarantee. It was proved that, with a speedup factor of 2, a CIOQ switch which adopts the LCF/MUF scheduling algorithm can exactly emulate an output queued (OQ) switch for any service discipline under fixedlength packets assumption. However, in current Internet environment, packets are transported with different lengths. Therefore, it is necessary to modify the LCF/MUF scheduling algorithm for variable-length packet traffic. For ease of implementation, the proposed algorithm calculates approximate cushions and does not perform re-ordering at output ports. We found, via computer simulations, that the performance of a CIOQ switch with a speedup factor of 5 that adopts the proposed single-iteration PB-LCF/MUF algorithm is close to that of an OQ switch under the weighted round robin service discipline for offered traffic load up to 0.9. In addition, the packet departure order can be maintained under the single-iteration algorithm. q 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Local Scheduling Policies in Networks of Packet Switches with Input Queues

A significant research effort has been devoted in recent years to the design of simple and efficient scheduling policies for Input Queued (IQ) and Combined Input Output Queued (CIOQ) packet switches. As a result, a number of switch control algorithms have been proposed. Among these, scheduling policies based on Maximum Weight Matching (MWM) were identified as optimal, in the sense that they wer...

Scheduling Algorithms for CIOQ Switches

This proposal deals with the design of scheduling algorithms for Combined Input and Output Queued (CIOQ) switches. For crossbar based switches, we demonstrate the poor performance of commonly used scheduling algorithms under overload traffic conditions using targeted stress tests and present ideas to develop robust, stress resistant versions of these algorithms which are still simple enough to ...

Cross-layer Packet-dependant OFDM Scheduling Based on Proportional Fairness

This paper assumes each user has more than one queue, derives a new packet-dependant proportional fairness power allocation pattern based on the sum of weight capacity and the packet’s priority in users’ queues, and proposes 4 new cross-layer packet-dependant OFDM scheduling schemes based on proportional fairness for heterogeneous classes of traffic. Scenario 1, scenario 2 and scenario 3 lead r...

On the Throughput Achievable by Isolated and Interconnected Input-Queueing Switches under Multiclass Traffic

Many recent studies provide an extended investigation of the maximum throughput achievable in Input-Queueing (IQ) or CombinedInput-and-Output-Queueing (CIOQ) packet switches. Some scheduling policies, among which maximum weight matching algorithms, were identified as optimal, in the sense that they were proved to achieve 100% throughput under any admissible single-class traffic pattern. Most of...
